What is the difference between short-term rehab, sub-acute, long term, and respite care?
• Sub-acute care is typically referred to when a resident is coming from the hospital and requires nursing and rehabilitation services. They do not need to be seen by a physician daily, however the physician's orders guide the plan of care.
• Short term rehab falls into the sub-acute care category. Many refer to "short-term rehab" when required nursing services are not the primary reason for admission, but rather the focus is on rehabilitation in order to return to the community
• Long term care means that a person becomes a resident in the facility and does not maintain a home in the community
• Respite is a short stay and typically occurs when a caregiver cannot care for a person for a short period of time in the usual home setting. Examples are when caregivers go on vacation, become ill, or just need a break from care giving. Respite stays are typically private pay.
