IF THE SHOE FITS…

Helen Hiltz with reporter Katy Phillips

What do an insurance broker, credit manager, shoe factory owner, airline reservations agent, world traveler, homemaker, wife and decorator have in common? These are the occupations of one woman, Helen Hiltz, resident of Goddard House in Brookline.

Helen’s career began at Liberty Mutual as a licensed insurance agent and broker. Appreciated for all her hard work, Helen was awarded Personal Sales Representative of the Year in 1952. She was then invited to work for another company. “Finally I couldn’t refuse,” remarks Helen and she became assistant to the owner of Dorelli shoe factory in Lawrence, MA. Trained in every area of the shoe business, she was promoted to credit manager and earned a reputation for toughness. When the shoe factory went up for auction after the owner’s death, Helen became its new owner.

Upon selling the shoe factory, Helen accepted a less stressful position in the reservations department for Northeast Airlines. Perks abounded with this job – flying all over the world, weekends in Florida and vacations to Europe. In her various careers, Helen Hiltz has embraced change and allowed it to take her down many roads.

Ask someone about their life’s work and you will inevitably learn a great deal about them. You may also be quite surprised by the challenges and twists encountered along their journey. We all possess a range of work-life experiences that may not be obvious in our current, day-to-day jobs.

Work is a central force of most of our lives, be it paid employment, raising children, homemaking, caring for relatives or volunteering. Work creates demands, responsibilities and opportunities to grow and better ourselves and others.

At Goddard House, all our jobs are defined around the goal of providing the very best care to the elders we serve, whether we are working as licensed nurses, nursing assistants, in the business office or serving as a volunteer on the Board of Managers. Soon you will be receiving our Annual Appeal 2004, Career Ladders Build Care Bridges. This campaign addresses the career development of Goddard House staff by supporting educational opportunities.

We look forward to updating you about the Matilda Goddard Fund for Staff Development and the Extended Care Career Ladder Initiative (ECCLI) grant that Goddard House received this year. These programs empower employees in our organization to build their care-giving expertise. We’ll also count on your financial support to keep Goddard House “working” at its best – for our elders, families, employees and communities.
